Diabetes is one of the chronic diseases affecting many Guyanese and to encourage intense patient follow-up, the Ministry of Health has established a diabetes registry in fulfillment of an agreement made at the Regional Summit on Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases held in September 2007 where Heads of States committed to establishing chronic disease registries.
“Guyana is well on its way to meeting that obligation from the summit…The register is the beginning of establishing a chronic disease register that will include hypertension and heart diseases, and asthma,” Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said yeh at a press conference today. Amerindian heritage month will be observed as usual in September with many of the activities slated to be held in the hinterland and interior regions. The celebrations will be launched on September 1 at the Umana Yana, Kingston.
Among the activities for the 2008 celebrations will be a forum on September 10 to mark the life and work of Stephen Campbell, an Amerindian of Arawak descent from Region One who became Guyana’s first Indigenous Member of Parliament in 1957.
Another activity slated for the month is a continental indigenous leaders’ conference to be held in Georgetown which will embrace leaders from across the Amazon. Read the full story
