Well-Preserved Thousand-Year-Old Mummy Found in Peru


The mummy is thought to have been an elite member of the Chancay culture, a civilization that thrived in the central coast of Peru from about A.D. 1000 to 1400. The territory of the Chancay was later home to the Incas, who formed what became the largest pre-Columbian empire in America. Tulane University anthropologist Kit Nelson is the co-director of a team that is in the process of unraveling the mummy. Read the full story

CARIFESTA Child-ART competition launched


The inaugural (Caribbean Festival of Arts) CARIFESTA  X Child Art Competition was launched in Guyana on 16 July 2008 at the Umana Yana with an exhibition that exemplified the meaningful contribution young people could make to the visual arts in future CARIFESTAs.
In his remarks, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony said that the aim of the activity was to create a space for the youth to actively participate in CARIFESTA X.
The Minister said that when the Board of Directors explored options to engender youth involvement in the festival, it was agreed that a visual arts competition was a fitting activity and the competitive feature was incorporated to stimulate their interest.  Read the full story

Immigration and Customs officers were today urged to play their role in ensuring that visitors’ first experience in Guyana starts off well as they are the first persons to greet them.

Health Ministry receives donation from All God’s Little Children Inc.


The Ministry of Health today received a quantity of medical supplies and equipment from the ‘All God’s Little Children Inc’ that will be distributed to two of the newly constructed Diagnostic and Treatment Centres.
