Portugal’s Ambassador to Guyana, Jaoa Cateano da Silva and Nigerian High Commissioner Musa John Jen Tuesday presented their credentials to President Bharrat Jagdeo at the Office of the President, New Garden Street. The new Ambassador of Portugal told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that his priority would be to foster business relations with Guyana and his country will soon appoint an Honorary Consul to this country. A sensitisation and training session on a National Drug Information Network commenced Tuesday with the aim of assisting authorities in countries like Guyana to garner timely information on illegal drugs. St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, Haiti and Guyana are the territories under consideration for the improvement of the information base to combat drug trafficking and abuse. Guyana has taken on a renewed focus on agriculture in face of rising world food prices, and in keeping with its goal of ensuring food security the Ministry of Agriculture has undertaken to rehabilitate abandoned drainage canals and structures to guarantee that drainage and irrigation is addressed. Monday, Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud commissioned the Anna Regina pump, Region Two which will significantly aid agriculture in that part of the region. Read the full story
