BERBICE ZONE GAFOORS 1ST DIVISION TWENTY/20 CRICKET COMPETITION

WAHIED EDWARDS (60) and RICHARD RAMDEEN (50) power Young Warriors to an 86 run victory over Police

The Berbice Zone of the inaugural 2008 Gafoors 1st Division 20/20 Cricket Competition, organized by the Guyana Cricket board, begun last Friday with five cricketers registering half centuries for their respective clubs.

At 6 for 1, losing opener Farouk Hussain for 2, Young Warriors needed an innings or two of substance from their other batsmen and they got 60 (6 4’s & 2 6’s) through Wahied Edwards and 50 (6 4’s & 3 6’s) courtesy Richard ramdeen, former West Indies

U19 batsman. Their second wicket partnership of 98 in twelve overs powered Young Warriors to 188 for 6 in the allotted 20 overs. Police in reply could only muster 102.

RoseHall Community Centre (RHCC) set Bermine a gettable target of 143 and the Bermine openers duly obliged, blasting 116 in an opening stand spanning 13.5 overs. When Maxie DeJonge fell for a 45 ball 57 (3 4’s & 2 6’s) his partner Devon Clements along with captain Eugene La Fleur saw the team home inside of 19 overs. Clements finished on 66* (2 4’s & 4 6’s) from 62 balls.

The fifth half century came from Berbice U19 allrounder Alex Amsterdam whose 57 (3 4’s) brought Scotsburg United to just 10 runs short of Port Mourant’s score of 136 for 7. West Berbice was routed for 60 in response to Blairmont Community Centre (BCC) 151 for 7. Bowling for BCC, Eon Abel, former Berbice player, took 4 for 10 from 4 overs bowling offspin to consign West Berbice to a 91 run defeat.

In the Saturday fixture between Albion Community Centre (ACC) and Skeldon Community Centre (SCC), ACC led by their captain, West Indies opening batter Sewnarine Chattergoon, discontinued their match against SCC whilst fielding with Skeldon requiring 13 from 11 balls to win. This development was occasioned by a six being signaled when a catch was deemed to have been completed beyond the boundary line by Jonathan Foo. Albion contended that the catch was legitimate as it was held within the playing area.

The matter is to be dealt with by the Competitions C’tte of the BCBC later this week;

Bermine created a major upset in Berbice cricket when they defeated Berbice Champions Albion Community Centre and in effect knocking them out, to reach the Berbice final of the 2008 Neal and massy First Division 40-Over Cricket Competition.

In the first Berbice Semi-final played on Sunday at the Cumberland Ground in Canje, they defeated Albion by 5 wickets. In the match Albion Community Centre won the toss and decided to take first strike.

Opening the batting were West Indies opener SEWNARINE CHATTERGOON and DOODNAUTH LALLBEHARRY who both started the innings cautiously. But in the 7th Over former national Under-19 pacer KELLON HENRY had CHATTERGOON caught for 3 at 23 for 1. Former West Indies middle order batsman NARSINGH DEONARINE came in and he and LALLBEHARRY pushed it along but after they had added 52 for the 2nd wicket in 7.4 Overs, Guyana Under-19 Offspinner STEPHEN LATCHA caught off his first ball for a well played 56 (3 fours and 2 sixes).

Berbice middle order batsman RANGA LACHIGADU and DEONARINE took the next 7 Overs to add on a further 29 runs but with LATCHA having both of them caught – LACHIGADU for 12 and DEONARINE for 28 – and offspinner CHARLES SHEPHERD removing Guyana Under-19 all rounder JONATHAN FOO and Guyana Legspinner DEVENDRA BISHOO both for ducks, Albion deteriorated from 104 for 2 in the 21st Over to 109 for 6 in the 23rd Over.

From that position, with Essequibo offspinner ANDREW WILLIAMS picking up two, two run-outs effected and Guyana Under-15 all rounder SHARMINDRA HARDYAL scoring 21 N.O at the bottom, Albion Community Centre could only reach151 all out in 39.3 Overs. Bowling for Bermine STEPHEN LATCHA took 3 for 27, ANDREW WILLIAMS 2 for 16 and CHARLES SHEPHERD 2 for 21.

When Bermine began their response, they were given the start they needed by the dominating former Berbice opening batsman MAXIE DE JONGE who was supported by Guyana Under-15 batsman JAMALLY ODLE. In the face of offspinner NARSINGH DEONARINE opening the bowling and right arm legspinner SEWNARINE CHATTERGOON coming on after one over of pace, 50 runs were added for the first wicket in 9.1 Overs before.

Guyana left arm spinner VEERASAMMY PERMAUL clean bowled ODLE for 8. Four Overs later BISHOO had DE JONGE caught for 42 and in the next over Permaul had former national under- 19 cricketer DEVON CLEMENTS caught for 3 and Bermine were suddenly 67 for 3 in the 16th over.

Coming to the rescue were former Berbice Under- 19 batsman DANE BENNY and this year’s Guyana Under- 19 captain, all rounder EUGENE LA FLEUR who between them played the all spin attack well enough to put on 71 between them for the 4th wicket before BENNY fell to PERMAUL for 37 leaving Bermine well placed at 138 for 4.

PERMAUL struck again without another run scored, clean bowling CHARLES SHEPHERD for a duck but it was too late as LA FLEUR (39 N.O.) and ANDREW WILLIAMS (3 N.O) saw Bermine through to 153 for 5 in 39.3 Overs.

VEERASAMMY PERMAUL took 4 for 17 from 7 Overs. The second semi- final between Port Mourant and Young Warriors is scheduled for Saturday at Port Mourant. The winner of that match will meet with Bermine in the final on Sunday at a venue to be named.

Set 172 to win, Essequibo were tottering on 65 for seven at the close after Berbice declared their second innings on 131 for five, on a day that saw eight minutes of play lost because of poor covers, that resulted in severe seepage onto the pitch. Resuming on 80 for three in their first innings, replying to the 180 for eight in 65 overs, made by the Berbicians, Essequibo were dismissed for 140 in 46.5 overs, giving the defending champions a handy first innings lead of 40.
