NFL players mourn Upshaw’s death


Gene Upshaw, the NFL star turned players’ union head who was instrumental in securing huge wealth for his members, has died aged 63.

After a 15-year career with Oakland, including two Super Bowl wins, he became executive director of the NFL Players’ Association in 1983. He led the NFLPA through a strike in 1987, and by 1989 the players had won a limited form of free agency. Read the full story

First Caribbean Women’s Rugby Championship Opens In Guyana


 

The North American and West Indies Rugby Caribbean women’s championship tournament kicked-off Monday at the National Park with teams from Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and the Cayman Islands competing. Guyana outplayed the Cayman Islands to win the one sided game 41 - 0, while Trinadad edged out Jamaica 12 - 10. Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony expressed his pleasure that the rugby tournament is being held in Guyana since it is very important that international events are hosted locally. “Sports help local teams to play at different levels. When there is international competition it brings that competitive spirit out, which is very good to develop the quality of the game,” Minister Anthony said as he noted that the rugby competition is very significant as a result of the game being a success with the involvement of both men and women’s team. Last yeas Guyana placed second. Dr. Anthony says the country should take full advantage of playing at home. Read the full story
